As collectors and dealers in vintage watches, we frequently encounter watches with foreign day or month wheels. This is especially common on chronograph watches powered by movements like the Valjoux 72C, Venus 200, Lemania 5100, and Valjoux 7750/7751 — as well as on Rolex Day-Date President watches. This guide gives you everything you need to identify the language of your watch’s day or month wheel instantly.

Some watch movements — particularly Japanese movements like the NH36 and Swiss movements like the ETA 2836-2 — offer non-Latin day wheel options. These are less common in the vintage market but increasingly seen in modern and NOS (new old stock) pieces.
The NH36 movement (used in Seiko and many microbrands) typically offers a two-language day wheel with English on one side and Japanese on the other. Saturday and Sunday are often printed in red to indicate the weekend. English is usually the first option in the two-position day wheel.

The day wheel abbreviation is a 2–4 letter code representing the day of the week in a specific language. For example, JEU = Jeudi = Thursday in French. Use the Thursday test: advance your watch to Thursday and match the abbreviation to the table above to identify the language.
DOM can mean different things depending on the language. In Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, DOM = Domingo/Domenica = Sunday. In German, DOM = Donnerstag = Thursday. Advance to another day to confirm which language you have.
SEX is the Portuguese abbreviation for Sexta-feira, which means Friday. Portuguese is the only major European language where Friday abbreviates to SEX. Your watch has a Portuguese day wheel.
A triple date watch displays the day of the week, the date, and the month simultaneously. The most iconic triple date movements are the Valjoux 72C (used in vintage Heuer, Breitling, and Movado chronographs) and the Valjoux 7751. Triple date watches are among the most collectible vintage complications.
The Rolex Day-Date (also known as the President) is the most famous Rolex with a full day wheel. It was introduced in 1956 and has been produced with day wheels in over 26 languages. The Tudor Prince Day-Date is the more affordable Tudor equivalent.
Yes — significantly. Rare language day wheels (Catalan, Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew) command substantial premiums on the collector market. Spanish and Portuguese wheels are also desirable. English wheels are the most common and typically carry no premium.
Yes, in most cases a watchmaker can replace the day or month wheel with one in your preferred language. However, on vintage watches, we recommend keeping the original wheel for authenticity. NOS replacement wheels are available for most common movements. Contact us for advice.
Month wheels are found on triple date movements including the Valjoux 72C, Valjoux 7751, Venus 200, and various Patek Philippe and IWC perpetual calendar movements. They display the month as a 3–4 letter abbreviation on the dial.
Most vintage day-date watches are set by pulling the crown to the first position and rotating it to advance the day wheel. Never force the day wheel between 9 PM and 3 AM — this is when the date-change mechanism is engaged and forcing it can damage the movement. If in doubt, contact a watchmaker.
