When we see bomber pieces like this cushion case Gruen diver's watch, we are reminded that there was a time, not so long ago, when men were measured by their deeds and remembered for their daring. With decidedly 70s case design and bold colors, coupled with reliable and robust movements, the diving watches of the era were built to accompany their owner adventurer across the globe and to keep time in its dark depths.
We could go on and on about the whimsy of its orange dial, its deep polished rehaul, or the wickedly cool acrylic bezel. We could tell you about Gruen's fascinating history as one of the first American watch companies to move production to Switzerland. We could bore you to tears with pontifications about a purer age of adventurers and the analog devices they relied upon. But we won't. Sometimes a watch just speaks for itself, and this is one of those times. A massive hunk of steel with a bright orange dial, used to plunge 1500 feet into the abyss?
Orange dials were interduce by Doxa watches, and most famous, was the Clive Cussler version. In the 1970 many watch manufactures made watch for each other or Zodiac Super Sea Wolf shares a DNA with this watch.
This is a beauty. This large 42.5 to 43mm. stainless steel 1970’s GRUEN dive watch are housed in a robust steel tonneau shaped case with screw down crown, mineral glass crystal, turning bezel and robust 15mm. thick screw-back case. These watches housed an automatic GRUEN precision movement which is quite reliable. This particular movement was just cleaned and is accurate. During the time these watches appeared, the ROLEX Submariner was good down to 660 feet, these GRUENS could go to 1500ft! These are great value. Defiantly a collector watch.
