Tudor Watch Logo 1936 — Founded by Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex

On This Page

Tudor Brief History

Tudor Watches was founded in 1926 when the house of Veuve de Philippe Huther registered the name in Geneva, Switzerland, on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex. Wilsdorf reacquired the brand in 1936 and formed Montres Tudor S.A. a decade later, in 1946. Tudor was founded as an entry-level brand to complement Rolex, with the goal of creating a more affordable watch while preserving the Rolex reputation for quality. Today, Tudor is a sister company to Rolex, and both are owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation.

Tudor Serial Number Overview

Tudor did not publish an official serial number registry (similar to most luxury watch brands of the era). The dates below are close estimates compiled from collector guilds and reference guides.

Tudor used Rolex cases in its early years, so the serial number location is the same: engraved between the lugs at the 6 o'clock position. You will need to remove the bracelet to read it. For example, serial number B5153XX dates to circa 1993.

Tudor Watch Serial Number Location — Between Lugs at 6 O'Clock

Where to find your Tudor serial number:

  • On the case back (earlier models)
  • Between the lugs at 6 o'clock (most common)
  • Inside the watch on the movement or case back

Note: For modern Tudor models, the H serial runs in parallel with O and J serials. For example, 2007 corresponds to both H7 and J1 serials.
