The Buttes Watch Company (BWC) was founded in 1924 by Arthur Charlet in his birthplace of Buttes, in the Val de Travers region of Switzerland. This high-lying valley near the French border has been known for its watchmakers since the 18th century. Despite the economic crisis of the early 1920s, Charlet had the courage to establish his own watch manufacture, focusing on reliable Swiss timepieces.
From that time on, the BWC-Swiss name became the primary trademark used in Europe and in English-speaking countries, and it was eventually registered as a worldwide trademark. In 1999, following a reorganization, BWC-Swiss was integrated into the newly founded Maddox AG in Pforzheim, Germany. In 2009, BWC celebrated its 85th anniversary—85 years of continuous history and a strong reputation among retailers, enthusiasts, and specialists.
Having a love for complications and complicated watches naturally leads to a love of chronographs. I’ve always appreciated two-register chronographs for their simplicity and clean dial layout, while three-register chronographs showcase the complexity and history of legendary movements—like the Omega 321 and 861 (used in the famous Moon landing watches), Zenith El Primero, Venus calibers often found in Breitlings, Landeron movements, and of course Valjoux.
Valjoux is responsible for some of the most iconic chronograph calibers ever made, including the Valjoux 72 used in vintage Rolex pre-Daytonas and the Valjoux 88, my personal favorite, which powered the Patek Philippe reference 2499 that sold for $3.3 million in 2018. I also have a soft spot for the Heuer Caliber 11, the first micro automatic chronograph movement with a date.
A chronograph is simply a watch that combines a stopwatch function with a traditional time display, using an independent sweep seconds hand and usually additional registers. Chronographs typically have separate pushers to start, stop, and reset the timing function (unless it is a monopusher), with the buttons most often located at the two and four o’clock positions.
The word “chronograph” comes from the Greek words “Chronos” (time) and “graph” (to write). The first modern chronograph was created in 1816 by French watchmaker Louis Moinet for use with astronomical equipment. His instrument could measure time to 1/60th of a second—an incredible level of precision for its era.
This is a beautiful military-style BWC chronograph, and it is very rare to find a watch this old in this kind of condition, especially with such a stunning tropical panda dial. The dial has aged with real character, giving the watch a unique presence on the wrist and a look that collectors actively seek.
Inside is the Valjoux 7733 manual-wind chronograph movement—one of the classic workhorse chronograph calibers of its time. It is robust, reliable, and a favorite among vintage chronograph enthusiasts. This particular example has been serviced and is keeping time to vintage standards.
The watch is part of our Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Program, which means it has been inspected, serviced, and is offered exactly as described. Very few examples remain in this configuration with this movement and dial condition, making it a highly collectible piece that is sure to increase in value over time.
This BWC military chronograph checks all the boxes for a serious vintage collector: a respected historic brand, a classic Valjoux 7733 movement, a rare tropical panda dial, and strong overall condition for its age. It represents the golden era of mechanical chronographs, when these watches were true instruments rather than fashion pieces.
With very few examples left in this kind of condition, this watch is not just a beautiful piece to wear, but also a smart long-term hold. It is definitely a collector’s watch and a standout addition to any serious chronograph collection.
Please look at all the pictures, as they are part of the description. The watch is working and serviced. The condition of the watch is the same as it appears in the photos. The watch is part of our Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Program. Contact me if you have any questions first.
