Regular price $8,499.99

Only 1 in stock

This is a beautiful Mathey- Tissot 14K Gold, Triple Date (Day-Date), Moon Phase, Chronograph with fancy case & lugs (very similar to“Cornes de Vache” lugs), and  Valjoux 88 which is one of my favorite and one of most complicated movement of the times. This has been recently serviced with box and some papers. It is very rare to find a watch this old with original box. Defiantly a collector watch. Please look at all the pictures, as they are part of the description. The watch is working and Serviced. This is a highly collectible watch. Very few left with this rare movement. Sure, to increase in value overtime, and a great addition to your collection. The condition of the watch is the same as it appears in the photos.  The watch is working  and is part of our new Certified Pre-Owned CPO Program. Contact me if you have any questions first.

A cousin of the celebrated Valjoux 72, the caliber Valjoux 88 is not your average manual-wind chronograph movement. It is one of the most complicated movement of the time, which for a guy like me that loves complications makes a great watch to have in my hands. Not only does it offer a great chronograph that Valjoux 72 offers (This caliber was also called, Full calendar watches are also know as Datora, Cato, Compax, Triple Date.), plus it offers triple calendar from Valjoux 72c and tops it off with sprinkles of moon-phase complications, which explains the success that it enjoyed with so many brands, including Mathey-Tissot, Doxa and Baume & Mercier. And the layout of all these complications is quite irresistible, almost offering the same configuration as a Patek Philippe reference 1518 (except for the date hand with the Valjoux 88). The Mathey-Tissot is a vintage watch that offers a lot, and with a lot of elegance.

Valjoux 88 usage instruction: Working and setting the moon phase device: Please don’t use the pushers to work the day, month and date indicators between 8 PM and 2 AM or to work the date and moon phase indicators between 10 AM and 2 PM when the automatic jumping takes place.

Mathey-Tissot History

Edmond Mathey-Tissot established his watchmaking business in the village of Les Ponts-de-Martel in 1886. He began by specializing in complications, and especially repeater pocket watches, that is, watches which chime the minute and/or the hour and quarter-hour. The firm soon proceeded to make chronographs and won a number of prizes. Mathey-Tissot 'Calamatic' gold triple calendar moon phase watch, c. 1947

In 1899, the outbreak of the Second Boer War led to such an expansion in demand for Mathey-Tissot watches that a new factory was built. Among the orders received was one from a nobleman in Scotland who commissioned 2,500 watches, having decided to present every man in his son's regiment with a repeater watch: in gold for officers, silver for other ranks

In 1914, Mathey-Tissot was represented at the Kew Observatory Competition by six Observatory Chronometers capable of split-second timing, all six being rated 'Class A' with the comment 'specially good'. The same year, Mathey-Tissot gained the Grand Prix at the Swiss National Exhibition. During the First World War, the company supplied the United States Army's Corps of Engineers with precision chronographs in large quantities, while General Pershing, commanding the United States Expeditionary Force, chose the watch to award to members of his own staff. Both before and after the Second World War, the company continued to supply the U. S. Army and the Royal Navy. The name 'E. Mathey-Tissot & Co.' was protected by trademark in the United States in 1937.

In 1969 and 1970, Elvis Presley bought several dozen customized Mathey-Tissot automatic watches for giving to family, friends, and staff, the purpose being to identify the wearers as having a privileged right of access to Presley's concerts and tours. For this object, a bezel setting was created with the name ELVIS PRESLEY in raised letters and four stars.
