Brief History

The 1950s and 1960s are widely regarded as a golden era for watches (by today’s standard vintage watches), with significant contributions to classical watchmaking and the evolution of contemporary sports watches. Vacheron Constantin, a member of the renowned Holy Trinity of watch companies Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin, played a pivotal role during this period by crafting exceptionally high-quality timepieces that have since become iconic.

Among these creations, the Vacheron Constantin Toledo reference 4963 stands as a testament to the timeless elegance synonymous with the brand. The reference 4963, a square-shaped time-only watch produced in the 1950s, epitomizes the essence of a dress watch and was available in various case metals, including white gold, pink gold, and the featured yellow gold variant.

Vacheron Constantin Toledo 1950’s (Ref. 4963)

Vacheron Constantin Toledo reference 4963 has a 23mm case that exudes an air of formality suited for black-tie or white-tie events, characterized by soft, rounded lugs that lend a subtle depth to the overall design. This configuration evokes reminiscence of the Vacheron Constantin Toledo, known as Cioccolatone, drawing parallels to the allure of a piece of chocolate—a watch that holds profound sentimental value. The oxidation of the gold case, resulting in a distinctive bluish-red hue on the hands, right side of the case, crown, and clasp of the strap, adds a unique luster to the timepiece.

This oxidation definitely is not for every vintage watch collector, but there have been a handful of oxidized-cased watches appearing at auction recently. The oxidation creates a unique watch, as no two watches will oxidize the same. Again, it depends on what type of vintage watch collector you are, but if you are so inclined, the case of this watch hits the vintage watch lover's soul.
