History of the Swatch Group

The Swatch Group was founded in 1983 through the merger of two struggling Swiss watchmaking conglomerates: ASUAG (Allgemeine Gesellschaft der Schweizerischen Uhrenindustrie AG) and SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogière SA). The merger was orchestrated by Nicolas Hayek Sr., who became the driving force behind the group’s transformation into a global powerhouse.

The context was critical: the Swiss watch industry was in crisis. The rise of affordable, accurate quartz watches from Japan — led by Seiko and Citizen — had devastated Swiss manufacturers throughout the 1970s. Employment in the Swiss watch industry collapsed from over 90,000 workers in 1970 to fewer than 30,000 by the early 1980s. This period became known as the “quartz crisis.”

The answer was the Swatch — a bold, colorful, affordable Swiss quartz watch launched in 1983. The concept was revolutionary: a fashion-forward, low-cost Swiss watch that could compete directly with Asian manufacturers on price while retaining Swiss quality. The Swatch was an immediate global success and is widely credited with saving the Swiss watch industry.

Over the following decades, the Swatch Group expanded aggressively through acquisitions, assembling a portfolio that today covers every price point from entry-level fashion watches to some of the most exclusive and expensive timepieces in the world.
