History of Lemania watches and watch movement. Especially Vintage Lemania 2310 movement! - Experts Watches

History of Lemania watches and watch movement. Especially Vintage Lemania 2310 movement!

Lemania is a Swiss watch brand with a rich history that dates back to 1884. The company was founded by Alfred Lugrin in L'Abbé, near Besançon, France. Initially, Lemania specialized in manufacturing precision movements for pocket watches.

In 1932, Lemania moved its headquarters to Les Longines in Switzerland and began producing chronographs. Over the years, Lemania gained a reputation for creating high-quality and accurate movements, particularly in the field of chronograph watches. One of Lemania's most famous movements is the Lemania 2310. Introduced in the 1940s, the Lemania 2310 quickly became a benchmark movement in the watch industry. It is a manual-winding mechanical movement known for its robustness, accuracy, and durability.

The Lemania 2310 movement has been used by several renowned watch brands, including Omega, Patek Philippe, and Breguet. It has powered iconic watches like the Omega Speedmaster Professional, also known as the "Moonwatch," which was worn by astronauts during NASA's Apollo missions.

The Lemania 2310 movement is a manual-winding, column-wheel chronograph movement. It features a traditional three-register layout, with sub-dials for continuous seconds, a 30-minute counter, and a 12-hour counter. The movement has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours and operates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (vph) (2.5 Hz) .

In 1999, the Swiss Swatch Group acquired Lemania, and the brand was integrated into the group's portfolio of watch manufacturers. After the acquisition, Lemania continued to produce movements for various Swatch Group brands while maintaining its reputation for excellence.

While Lemania watches are not as widely available as some other Swiss brands, their timepieces are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. The Lemania 2310 movement, in particular, holds a special place in horological history and remains highly regarded for its craftsmanship and reliability.

It's worth noting that Breguet and Lemania have shared a close relationship in the past. Breguet (under swatch watch group) acquired Lemania in 1992, which allowed Breguet to benefit from Lemania's expertise in chronograph movements. Today, Breguet continues to produce exceptional watches, incorporating both their own in-house movements as well as movements derived from Lemania's legacy.
